I normally recommend poly bushes, it's pretty much one of the first mods I do to most cars I intend to keep. They do give a much improved cornering, accelerating, braking experience the downside is as some compliance is removed, they can bit a little harsh at times.

If the bush has ripped, it sounds like it's been bolts up in an unnatural position and as you've let the jack down and the bush has took the weight it's ripped the bush back to the position it should be.

Well, all sorted now thanks to Chris coming over and getting his hands dirty - wot a star!! 

He also pointed out that my cam cover seals need doing however, this will have to wait as I now have my crank position sensor to change  >:(
