Another tunnie bodge....
« on: 29 January 2012, 16:13:03 »

So I went snowboarding last week, like with the motorbike I like to record things, but I was getting board of helmet cameras. So in true tunnie style bodge a DIY bit of kit was made.

I was considering a GoPro HD, but at £160, its a rather expensive toy. I already had a point and shoot Panasonic TZ10 which shot in HD anyway.

I wanted to make a "mono-pod" - Like a tri-pod but just one leg. Something to hold with the camera on the end.

So down to local DIY shop, bought one wooden stick & 3 bolts. The stick was cut down to length so it would fit in my ruck sack. The spare bit then overlapped over the top, with two bolts through it. Once acted like a hinge so I could fold it away, so it would pack nicely, but long enough to give me a wide angle.

Final bolt, the thread matched that of the camera's standard tripod mount. So out with the gaffer tape to seal it and for less than £2.00 it was made.

Results were rather pleasing, although as I'm not very good at snowboarding I was using my arms to much, unprofessional videos of the same style managed to keep it much more steady  :(

Looks pretty good. Must go skiing again. Must lose a bit of weight first though. ::) Last time I came to the conclusion that face plants with 16 stone behind them tend to smart a bit. ;D

I face planted a couple of times, but that was in fresh deep snow. I was improving my skills off piste :)

Yeah, it shoots in HD and coped well with the sun & snow. Very impressive camera, you can even customise the aperture, shutter ect. Lot of features considering it's not a SLR :)

It does look wierdly like you're holding the tiller of a boat and steering it down the piste at times, though. ;D
