Bloody council...
« on: 24 January 2012, 23:45:14 »

My mother passed away on the 15th Jan aged 95 and lived in a council house. My sister and myself have been arranging all the funeral details and closing her bank and post office account and sending away claim forms for the small insurance policy she had as well as all the other legal stuff. We also been trying to clear her house at the same time. Not easy when you have to get up at 4-45am each day to start an early shift at work then start sorting out the details when you get home. Most of the legal stuff has been dealt with now. Just the house clearance to go. I received a letter from the council today firstly commiserating us on our recent loss then going on to say that it was "goverment legisation" to charge full rent for the property from the time the tennant died to the day we hand back the keys. i found a recent rent statement my mum received which stated that she was £220 in credit with her rent and had been for the past 3 years. Do they think that everyone is capable of doing all the legal stuff and arrange a funeral within a few days? I was hoping to reclaim her rent credit to help offset the funeral and monumental stone costs. Looks like that is going to be re-claimed by the council in rent now. Had a quote for the house clearance today and what with all the white goods ( cooker, tumble drier, upright fridge freezer, washing machine all less than 2 years old ) plus the furniture i was offered £110. They must know that being a council house we will be on a tight timescale. Going to ring the council in the morning but don`t really expect anything as i will probally get "goverment legisation" thrown back at me a few times. Oh well.. rant over. Off to bed now for some much needed sleep.

That's a despicable sum to offer , shame on them.
I recall when I had to do the same when I lost my father , it's a very intense period with so many small but time consuming things to do .
I wish you well Robbo in getting through this truly awful period .
Good luck
Don

Robbo, I've sent you a PM,    it may not help a lot, but it's better than a kick in the teeth......       our sincerest condolences.

Update...   Oh well.. nearly all over. All the boxes ticked now, as they say, but one last twist of the knife in our back on Saturday. As we are having to pay the full council rent on my late mum`s council house from the time of her passing away till we hand the keys back, we decided to take the offer we had for her remaining white goods which was for £100. Not a princly sum i know for some nearly new goods but the time factor was urgent. When we had the man round Thursday for an estimate he told us he wasn`t interested in any of the furniture only the remaining white kitchen goods, and that`s what he was baseing his offer on, but would break up the larger items and take it away for us anyway. It was agreed that he would call Saturday morning to clear the house. This fell in well with our plans to have a clear house and hand the keys back on Monday thus not incurring any additional rent to pay. As i had to take care of some final arrangements Saturday morning my sister agreed to be at my mums house when they called to let them in. When i called in later the clearance team had left and i found my sister upset. I found out that they didn`t take one of the large wardrobes, one of the smaller ones, a wooden radiogram and various other smaller items. Apparently they told my sister that as my mum had grab rails up her stairs, which they didn`t realise when they looked round the house for the estimate, they couldn`t get the pieces down the stairs. Also, as we had given away a couple of furniture items to neighbours that the clearance people "didn`t want", the estimate had changed and he would only give us £90 now. My sister didn`t know what to do and took the offer. I rang the shop to find out what was going on but it was closed. My brother in law and myself had to spend all today breaking up the wardrobes etc and take them up to the local tip. Thank god i have an estate and only had to make a couple of trips. My mum`s funeral is Tuesday so i will wait until Wednesday to let these vultures know what i think of them.  >:(

The problem is that most people most of the time submit to the 'authority' of the bastards from the local authorities. We need a revolution and for the people to be in charge.
