Frozen antifreeze - how many celsius?
« on: 03 February 2012, 17:38:52 »

Hi all,

at how many Co my antifreeze become to be frozen as it's calibrated to -25Co ? It sounds silly a bit but each fluid go through several phase until reach frozen status eg simple fluid, jelly and at the end it'll be totally frozen. Supposedly how long does the jelly status take and where start the stone frozen one ?   :-\    Meteorologists prognostized lower than -20Co in the next some days... :o :o :o

From that it looks like a 50%:50% water ethylene glycol mixture will freeze at -33degC.

With places colder than this, yesterday morning it was -36degC where my wife lives in Ukraine and people having old / weaker mixtures, I can see quite a few people getting caught out with frozen engines.  :-[ :-[ :-[

it depends on how pure the glycol is regardless of claims and also city elevation..

in ideal conditions it must keep up to -40, but practically I dont it think it will resist more than -30..

and if your mixture ratios are different I would start to search a garage.. :-\

My son had to protect his truck down to -40 when he was in Norway. It was -30 when he was there and his five litre container of 'guaranteed not to freeze' screenwash froze solid in the container.  ::) ::)

Bad news... :( Tomorrow antifreeze mixing (again)... Thx guys !  :y    Laszlo

Ps.: hereby everybody use a little poorer mix being Hungary's climate really moderate and colder than -20 celsius is really rare...it is the first hard winter in the last 20 years.
