non start / power steering fault
« on: 19 February 2012, 21:53:40 »

car not used for a week, would not start on the button like usual. floored the throttle and it then sprung into life after a bit of spluttering. revved the knackers off it to clear it at which the aux belt complained loudly.

on pulling out the drive at idle, the steering was very heavy. on further investigation later with the bonnet up, i could here what sounded like a relay ticking by the battery.

are these faults related?

ps (do code readers work on the early migs or is it a case of paperclip test only.)

Struggling to see how they could be related, unless the PAS pump was seized, and not allowing it to crank fast enough. Revving the tits off it freed PAS pump (and damaged in process)?

Worth measuring voltages, checking batt and alternator, as per Kevin Wood's guide first :y

Your 2.5 is not OBDII or EOBD compliant.

Car started fine today no problem, but the heavy steering at idle and the ticking from a relay by the battery on turning the wheel remain.

cranking speed and voltages ok, 13.7 no load and 13.6 load just off idle, does drop to 13 on idle. not ideal, but dont think this is the cause.

Before i bought the vehicle, it had been into the local country garage due to a breakdown. The owner was not on best terms with the vehicle after a bill for £500 to diagnose and replace the crank sensor!

The autobox going into in limp was the last straw for the previous owner.

I got a feeling that the hit and miss element might be the result of a cheapy crank sensor.

no codes stored thou?

Sure its a relay, not the PAS Pump itself?

seems like the power steer pump making the occasional  ticking noise on turning .

is there anything electrical related to the power steering that would cause low assistance at idle before i condemn the pump?

The servotronic is a speed related relay that gives more assistance at slow seeds & less assistance at higher speed ........ it lives behind the glove box.
