I am staying with my Mum and dad in England for a few days while my dad has his hip replaced. Not a moment too soon for the pain and lack of sleep.

I am "shocked" at the age of the household appliances. Mum was ironing with her trusty iron bought in 1956. She had a steam iron but didn't get on with it and it broke anyway. They don't make things nowadays like they used to. Next shock was the vacuum cleaner which is a similar age(and works very well) - made of heavy metal! I have checked it over as the cable looked a bit frayed. She has a new vacuum cleaner but it doesn't work as well too so lives in the garage.

Anyone else got relatives (or they themselves) got appliances from yesteryear?

The ex mother in law has a chest freezer that is forty years old. the only thing that has been replaced is the lid seal because her hubby splilt creosote on it. It still runs as good as new

'New', doesn't necessarily mean better! Many appliances made in the '50's & '60's' are still going strong in households across the Country and beyond needing a replacement flex (as you pointed out) will outlive many 'modern' counterparts which aren't built to last but rather have 'redundancy' built in!
Also, Best Wishes to Your Dad for a speedy recovery and a future life without the pain! Not forgetting your Mum, who doubtless carries on regardless, seeing to all & sundry before herself!

Singer sewing machine that my Father bought for my Mother in 1962. I can still remember as a very young child going into the Singer shop with him in Hamilton Scotland on a sunny day to buy it ( cash ).
It was something my Mother always wanted and he saved and saved to get it , unfortunatly she passed away in 1963 at the early age of 40 never being fit enough to use it.
I kept it long after my sister tried to learn the art of dressmaking and had it reconditioned by a specialist about 20 years ago.
My wife has two other machines but says the old Singer is streets ahead of the modern counterparts in design and operation.
It'll be passed down again in time.......

Got a chest freezer out in the shed which is ovewr 25 years old.Bloody thing wont die.Its hideous looking,mostly because I used to used the top of it as a workbench.Its a proline, which was Icelands own brand - not exactly top of the range.

That depends how well it she would stand up to the constant requests for tea and nipple tweaking..
