"Lower Arm" is the wishbone ... front bush is the one that normally fails IIRC.

Replace as a pair, lots of threads on possible solutions from polybushing to cheap and nasty ... my personal preference is Lemforders from All German Parts .. if you buy a pair you don't pay postage last time I looked.

Good news on the "Pass" and another year of motoring awaits.

I had a similar word from the tester this year and my understanding was the lower arms were in fact the wishbones according to their lingo. :y

Cheers Amba for the clarification, the problem seems now days is that a lot of the test centres are part of one of the big chains as this one was part of the GO group and you do'nt even get to see the car being tested due to H&S limitations on customers wandering around the site, also you do'nt get any feed back just a hand coming through a hatch with a pass or fail sheet, now off to explore the parts sites to order my bits ::) :y

As far as I am aware, that is not allowed.  There MUST be a customer viewing area to ensure that you can watch - from a distance - your car going through its test.

I would be inclined to jack up the offending corner and have a good look yourself ,checking for any excessive play or movement.

Not uncommon for things to be dreamt up ,especially  " even though its passed gov we really should fix it for you and help our selves to the contents of your wallet ". Possibly being cynical as the guy did pass it but better to fully identify the offending part before spending out on bits.

As sain if wishbone ball joint is worn and you have no history of the entire bone and intend keeping the car probably worth doing the entire wishbone instead of just the ball joint..either way you would need to get the alignment sorted out afterwards.

Best of luck either way...sorted mine out last week with help from another kind OOFer and noticed the difference straight away.

Yes there was one,all the blinds are permanently closed as I was there three weeks ago for another MOT and it was just the same then and I  got the distinct feeling that they want the blinds closed and I really was'nt to bothered about watching the test as it was'nt going to affect the outcome, but will certainly bear what has been said in mind for the next time and if I'm in an awkward mood maybe I'll insist they keep the blinds up :y

Yes,going to keep the car for the forseeable future,so will go for Lemforders probably, car is only doing 3000miles a year so I'm not to worried about other members experiences of early failure with the various after market replacements. :y

That refers to the front wishbone bush. If the test is correct and the rearward wishbone bush and steering knuckle ball joint are ok, you could just fit polly. £40 odd are they?

You must be able to view the car being tested ;) And ISTR that that you have a right to be shown the offending items too :-\ :-\

Thankfully the Test Centre I use is one where I know the guy and I generally have a good walk around and prod and poke :y I even noticed a potential fail item that he missed a few years back ::) Although it didn't fail :-X ::) :y
