Evenin' all can anyone inform me if red diesel or any diesel for that matter degrades  in time? I'm aware that petrol does but don't know about diesel. The reason I ask is the boat club that I'm in has got alot in stock from last year, It's used to fuel the tractors that are used to launch the boats.

Diesel is an oil Tony, so should be good for years as stated above.

I run a diesel heater in my garage. I used to get diesel in slightly iffy way. The last lot I got was in 1999 and I still have 4 gallons of it left. It looks fine and still burns well in the diesel heater.

I will only mention how I got this diesel in a PM if anyone is really interested

Only potential problem is water content.  If the storage tank has a water drain at the bottom should be fine.

It's perfectly legal to buy cherry, so the only "iffy" way of getting it is if it's been stolen and you know (or believe) it's stolen when you obtain it

How would that qualify as iffy then?

The correct answer is no and also yes.

Pre this year then no as its good old proper diesel.

As of this year......yes, as red now has to be low sulphur and will also contain a quantity of bio diesel. Do be aware that some companies were suppling the low sulphur stuff last year but they should have adviced you of this when filling

We are tackling this on the loco by the use of an approved biocide to stop the bacterial growth and also by adding two stroke oil to improve the lubrication properties of fuel (which are reduced as part of the sulphur removal process but ours has been well controled thanks to good support from Brobot our local bulk supplier)
