Windscreen replacement .
« on: 07 March 2012, 21:04:18 »

Having autoglass round in the morning to replace the screen , they told me once its fitted i need to leave it an hour for the bonding stuff to set . With the lowish temperatures at the mo im thinking to leave it a bit longer than they say . What do you think  ???

You should ask someone that fits them for a living - like Autoglass  ::)

It should be fine after an hour, in reality it will probably be fine by the time they have cleaned up and fitted the trims.

A work of advice, check it over carefuly and insist they leave no masking tape on it as thats what they use to cover up fit issues particularly around the tops corners.......if they argue its to hold it in, ask them if they are able to tell you how a piece of poxy masking tape can hold a bloody great heavy screen down onto high viscosity and grab goo.....

Good luck!

Pretty sure they told me the same thing when they replaced mine - I left it all afternoon to be sure and it was fine and that was a cool cloudy day.

I always thinks the fitters are a bit of a lottery though, I always supervise them and as much as they hate it I always hang around while they are working on my car as I have had a couple of bad experiences with replacement windscreens, one nearly ending up in the small claims court!

The good ones remove them with a cheese wire, the bad ones use a powered knife or just a knife.....its these that often catch and mark the trim plus cause paint work damage.

They should then use a special tool to remove the old bond without paint damage, if there is any paint damage they should apply a special fast set sealer.

Then its a case of apply a set amount of new bond and fit the screen with new edge clips ......

How much of the above is done is dependent on the fitter.......

How good a job is done is dependent again on the fitter, the screen position and also the quantity of bond used.

I have fitted quite a few screens at the place I work and the adhesive they use is usually warmed to ease adhesion and as it cools (and over time) it looses the solvents and hardens, sure after one hour it won't fall out but if you was to be involved in an accident, the screen would not but fully bonded to the body and the stiffness it offers to the car will not be there.

It takes at least 12 hours for the adhesive to cure, longer in cooler temperatures.

Just one other thing to note is, I have had the screen in my Omega changed and although they corrected a rust issue, they also buffered the trim around the screen.
They ended up fitting another screen and a new trim from VX.

new edge clips

Thats a must then ? I take it all widscreens come with some sort of warranty in case of bad fitment causing it to crack or seep water in  :-\

All fitted , not without a bit of dispute though . When the trim was removed he spotted 2 patches of rust but only surface rust , he said
i shouldn't really replace in case the rust has holed the metal and then you will have to get it repaired before i will fit it ....i told him to take the screen out so i could look and as i thought it was flakey paint so i rubbed it down and treated with kurust .Fitted and job done with new trims and wiper's .  ;)

good work, also another reason not to drive the car after screen is fitted,is that when you open and close a door it causes a vacum and sometimes it has been know for the glass to pop from the bonding agent, hence why they say leave it for a couple of hours  :y

Had mine done in the cold weather before Xmas and just followed the instruction that the AutoGlass tech gave me, left it for an hour before driving it and 24 before washing it and it has been fine ever since with no problems at all.
Only one point you need to know and that is they will not do it if the conditions are damp or its raining. If it is put it under some form of shelter, or take it to their depot.
You want the best?
By using AutoGlass you got it........ :y

He had some sort of cheese wire thingy to break the bond  :o quite interesting to see how its all done , glad i was there to treat the flakey paint and he did say whoever replaced the last one made a pigs ear of it  >:( Just told me not to drive for an hour and dont use any car wash for a few days but dont use them anyway . What a difference with new wiper's as well with squeak free blades  :)
Went on to replace 2 track rod ends today as well so lots been done .....owch my back  ::) :y

That would never happen (IMHO) car are fitted with vents to allow free flow of air, reasons for this is mostly for heating and ventilation and to stop pressure inside the cabin preventing the doors to closing. Also, if the car had no way of venting pressure, there is no way there'd be enough of it to push a screen off. You would need a lot of pressure over a long period of time.... IMO... :-)
