Car Insurance - a mine field of options
« on: 11 March 2012, 09:14:21 »

My Admiral Multicar is up at the end of March. My premium has gone up by a third to £1350 for the 3 cars. Unfortunately my wife had a slight bump during the year.

However, in trawling through using confused.com as the base you get some crazy quotes.

For example Privilege were quoting a £250 price on the Phaeton and others not much more until you see the compulsory excess is £500 to £700, and then you add in legal cover and protected no claims bonus.

I feel  a reasonable position to take is a combined compulsory and voluntary excess of £350, take the legal cover if it is around £25 pa, take the protected no claims and drop the courtesy car (I can usually do a deal with the garage). The other thing to watch out for is a restriction on the EU/green card travel as the inusrer might get you for additional if you go abroad with the car (some do not include or only give you a few days).

On my wife's car ( Signum 1.9 cdti) plus 3 other drivers - Quote Me Happy came up with £320 with only a £200 combined excess. Any body know much about them? Good/bad experiences.

Just waiting for Admiral to open at 10am to get some more details on their price hike.

Yep. You have to watch it these days as they seem to be cutting the default policies down to the bare minimum and cranking up the excess and extras to give an attractive initial quote.

I think they are becoming like the budget airlines. :(

This is what I've just found out insuring the mig. Normally driving a 3rd persons car was always included. Now that privilege will cost me a extra 40 quid a year. In some ways it's good as paying for part of a insurance policy your never use is wrong. However you do have to really read the level of cover you get.

I rang Admiral yesterday for a giggle (SWMBO renewal went from £250 to £550 :o)

They confirmed that the price they had quoted did include the claim and windscreen from May, even though on the Proof of no claims they sent it clearly states she has had no claims ::) Managed to knock £50 off but still told them to take a hike as she's covered under my trade policy, FC on any vehicle for less than Admiral wanted for her renewal ::)

Mind you, the excess is higher :-X :-X

Right - bottom line is this:

Admiral kicked off at : Phaeton £480 Signum £460 and Omega £370

Then when I said to let policy elapse they went to £432,£432 and £310.

Best quotes now are Quotemehappy for Omega and Signum £230 and £350 respectively

For Phaeton it is Swiftcover at £360

I had good experiences with them, although the only claim I had was for glass, but I've heard that they can be a PITA for claims :-\ :-\

Through work I have some insight into the Insurance industry. Many of the high excesses are due to every company trying to be cheaper than everybody else on the headline price to grab the business as excesses tend to be missed or are a lower priority to the customer.

Many of the lessor known aggregators may offer better deals / lower excesses due to charging the insurance companies smaller commission rates. The high profile advertising (and cuddly toys) has to be paid somewhere by somebody, yes you!

So at the end of the day, it pays to shop around try all of the popular aggregators and some of the not very high profile ones and always check the insurance companies own website.

Agreed. The cuddly toy would have been a very expensive gimmick last time I renewed. ;D
