ABS sensors
« on: 26 March 2012, 18:47:28 »

Hi guys, I get abs light and dead speedo occasionaly, I know what's the worst case scenario but would like to try fixing easiest things first.
What I 'd like to know is the price of a new sensor since I don't find that anywhere on the net.
Need to take a look at the front ones first, clean them and measure if they're still working anyway though ABS light is on right after start when cold for a sec or two then disappears which points me into ABS ECU
Thanks

Yet to see sensor fail. Seen the wiring fail though.

But if its post 1998, you know its not the sensors ;D

If you have access to a decent code reader, read the ABS ECU, that will tell you which sensor, if it is a sensor, is fubar

Sorry for the hi jack but are the ABS ECU's more prone to failing on the later cars then?

The 3 channel ones fitted up to 1997 are pretty bombproof, baring a sticky relay problem. The 4 channel ones, fitted 1998 onwards, seem fragile.

Oh right. So is it the same component which fails everytime within the ECU? I know Volvo's have a similar issue and a friend of mine fixes those. Might be a alternative to trying to scrounge one from a breakers. Do they need recoding when being fitted from another car?

They are configured with engine and transmission type, IIRC, so yes, they need Tech2'ing if swapping from a dissimilar Omega.

It's quite possible that Volvo use the same Bosch ECU and the same fault occurs. The firmware is likely to be totally different in the Volvo application, though, and it would probably not be possible to swap a Volvo until into an Omega and vice versa. Best solution is always to get your unit refurbed so the configuration doesn't need to be changed.
