Windscreen Replacement
« on: 20 March 2012, 17:03:12 »

I got a chip/crack in my windscreen today that is very close to the bottom edge - i will measure it later but in case i need a replacement is there a specific type of screen i need request, i.e. mine is an elite, has a green band across the top and not sure if it has the heat reflective purple tinto to it. Maybe someone could confirm

Thanks

If it is not in your field of vision, and you can live with it providing it's not to big, i would just leave it, mine has a crack at the top right hand side and has just sailed through an mot.

Depends if it has a rain sensor?

Iirc no heat reflective screen on yours, or I would have called a man out o swap it onto mine when you weren't looking.   :-X  ;)

Here are the Screen details kindly given to myself by Andyc back in August
When I was'nt happy with a replacement screen fitted to Miggy
On investigation turned out to be a screen without the GM spec

Part No 90457721
EXC Heat Reflective
EXC Rain Sensor
234.79 +vat

Part No 24433002
With Heat Reflective
With Rain Sensor
272.58+Vat

Part No 24433003
EXC Heat Reflective
With Rain Sensor
211.73+Vat

I had the Heat Reflective one fitted  PN 24433002 for health reasons (my wife)
By choice I would prefer PN 24433003 as I don't care for the purplish tint on the screen
Much prefer Miggy's appearance with matching glass in all windows

The 2 GM Screens with Rain Sensors were I understand stocked in Germany by Opal
These I think are your only 2 options
As if yours is an Elite it will have rain sensative wipers
Hope this Info helps

Thanks guys - had a chat with autoglass and looks like they can repair it (it seems far enough away from the bottom edge to repair it).

Cliffo that info is very useful and Chris we should have swapped screens when i had the blue mig as that was heat reflective (purple tint)!
Mine doesn't have rain senstive wipers which i believe was the norm for early facelift elites.

I had mine done a month or two ago by Fleet Autoglass (01525 375050). I was put in touch  with them by a guy who is a manager at Pilkington Glass. Lifetime guarantee and deffo use original Pilkingtons and not a far east copy...

They charged me £170 all in and that included the plastic channel that goes around the screen (channel is about £20 ish), but they reused the external trim as mine was good and not that old...

They were really good...

Before that I had it replaced by AutoWindscreens who were worse than bad... Even worse than that...

The last time Autowindscreens changed the screen they didn't fit it properly, but unfortunately by the time I called them they had gone into administration and the company who took them over did so without liability, meaning they didn't honour the warranty...

I had a heat reflective on mine, but I went for the clear mainly because the heat reflective one can cut down mobile phone signal strength, and is only meant to help keep the car cooler... Not something that gets much use in this country  :O)

Ahh i may have a clear glass replaced in mine, my ex cop mv6 screen has 100s of tiny chips all over it it will kill a set of blades in a month!! so i was guna give it the screwdriver & hammer treatment & get a new screen on insurance....
but before i had chance on my way back from southampton a lorry pinged up 2 stones into my screen hitting the black area on o/s top & bottom of glass but on my way home (100miles later) the crack got bigger & bigger now its halfway down drivers side of screen & has stopped...., mot in 8mths but as they are still gritting the roads im going to try & wait till end of april/may before i have a new one because just my luck it get chipped again!!!
