omega gearbox lockup

I heared that the omega gear box for the auto 3.2 stops slipping and lockas up at 50mph.  Is it possible to update / upgrade / modify the gearbox computer to get the gearbox to lock up at 30.  This would save a considerable amount of petrol and increase acceleration.  Someone was telling me that with the right software you can basiclly change the value of the lock speed from 50 to 30 and then upload the new values to the gearbox computer.  Is this possible? 

It just seems like i get loads of revs and not enough movement in the car sometimes.  I know you can't really compare but the 7.5 tonne isuzu i drive for work doesnt seem to have the clutch slipping effect i seem to get on the omega.  Neither does my freinds honda accord auto.

Im gonna service it next week but i cant see how this can get the mpg from 15 town, 20 motorway to 20 town, 25 motorway.

If anything I'd say the current setup locks up too early, especially as it doesn't delay lockup if you have a bootload of throttle on (unless you're into kickdown territory). It does tend to bog down when it locks up, I find.

In addition, the lockup clutch is not necessarily that robust, so protecting it from engaging at full engine torque output has a part to play in when it will lock up.

In theory the gearbox ECU could be remapped to change its' behaviour. I'm not aware of anyone who can do it though.

15 in town is poor. Just to mention using the auto boxes lack of engine braking to roll up to junctions etc can pay dividends.

Also worth checking multi rams working, exhaust for blockages, and correct cam timing.

Unless your tearing around the place, in which case fair play. :)

Also, I find the latest firmware update does lower the lock up speed... Under the right conditions of course. Nearer 45 it seems to me...?

Mine reaches lockup at 45, althought i don't suffer from the slipping that you mention. Revs and road speed seem to be proportional to gear changes imo.

you'd need a different torque converter.......

the Omega, being a luxury car, has a fairly "loose" torque converter to make it as smooth as possible. This means that the two "sides" of the converter aren't going at the same speed until the road speed is relatively high, and you can only lock the converter when they're almost matched already.

Think of it as an elastic band - when you set off, the band stretches, only to contract again as the speed gets up and there's less urge.

If you just lowered the lock-up engagement speed, you'd end up with one hell of a bang.

it would be possible with a "tighter" torque converter, but I'm not aware of anyone making those - it would make the car a lot less comfortable, too.

there is some sense in holding on to the lock-up for longer during deceleration only, for engine-braking reasons. I have done this before on off-road vehicles.
