NHS , what a shower
« on: 20 March 2012, 20:01:52 »

My father was due to have his hip replaced at Scarborough Hospital in the Ash Ward. The operation was scheduled for the 29th February 2012 at 7 a.m.. It was cancelled and he was advised by phone at 1.30 p.m. on the 28th February.

I made arrangements to be off work and flew to Britain from Spain to help my elderly parents during and after the operation. A somewhat wasted and pointless exercise.

Meanwhile the pain and discomfort that my father endures continued. He sleeps fitfully in a chair at night and has done for around three months. The operation was rescheduled for the 21st March at 7 a.m.. That too was cancelled on the 20th March at 4p.m.

I have asked the PALS unit what the official reasons for the two cancellations were. The first I believe was due to Ward closure due to infectious bugs(two other wards also closed).

I am so mad about it.

Don't worry Varche, the NHS is the fifth largest employer in the world. When they've recruited another few tens of thousands and moved up a few places in the rankings, they'll be able to cancel with a few more days' notice.  ;) ::) ::) ::)

Doesn't surprise me.

My ex-wife has had both replaced.

First one done and plan was to do second about 2 months later as she would walk lop sided.

Because NHS hospital overloaded and could not meet target, she was sent to private hospital to have operation so was within target time. Just before operation, they brought in the aftercare stuff she would need and told her that would be almost £200. Never one to hold back she soon put them straight on that as an NHS patient and wasn't charged.

February arrived and no operation date for second joint. The replacement of the first made the other hip much more painful and much more difficult for her to walk. Ended up on much stronger pain killers from GP.  >:( >:(

Kept chasing hospital who said she would be sent a letter with next operation date, but with no letter arrived, 4 months later hospital admitted where first hip had been done by private hospital at NHS expense, she had dropped out of their system for getting the second one done.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

My dog gets much better service at our local vets.  :o :o :o

We are in same position with my mother - cancelled 9th Jan because of so called chest infection - anesthetist recommended 3 months wait - she is still in hospital/recuperation bed alternating. She then picked up a DVT - other hip is now hurting - referral to hip specialist has been made again.

Fully agree, take a look at the previous post I did on this subject that some NHS wally replied to and tried to baffle everyone with his pathetic ' ;D "truthful" ;D statistics!
Typical of the NHS in its present form.
What about the latest waffle that the reason for the poor care of the elderly is due to low staff levels?
They are hardly overworkede and are certainly paid more than the average wage that we can expect so where is their justification for that excuse? Maybe one day I will discover why although I am a little overweight due to a lack of mobility caused by a serious industrial accident even though I do excercise and control my diet I am instructed to make a greater effort by a nurse that is grossly overweight, in fact probably heading towards being morbidly obese. She is not the only one in that hospital either. Why are thgere so many seriously overweight nurses anyway if they allk apparently are on their feet all day running around? It cannot be both ways, either they do not enough running around or they eat too much!
Same subject but a bit different is that I would like to be told why visitors and patients to our hospiotals have to pay through the nose for car parking when the car parking spaces for the staff are very, very heavily subsidised. I have asked many staff and departments but told that it would be against the ' ;D :D data protection act ;D :D. THis bleedin act needs to be sent to the rubbish bin so the secrecy can be stopped and the truth made clear to all.
Who pays for the NHS wasters anyway? We do - the put on taxpayers........ >:(

I can understand your distress, however I for one own my life to the NHS. To this day I still feel if I had been in any other country when I had my accident I would of died. The level of care and dedication I received was second to none and yes I have had some routine ops cancelled. I've had care all the way from intensive to out patient and I know it can be frustrating but unless you pay mega bucks with private cover your never get a better care. I'm not saying it's not without it's faults. Any organisation can and will slip up. I really hope they sort father soon. It's no fun living in chronic pain (I know) but please don't get to grumpy with the people directly involved t's not normally their fault.

Through my company my staff and I have good quality private medical cover.
Whilst it would pay out for everything I do not use it and encourage my family and my staff and their families not to use it for routine stuff that the NHS can do and providing there is no massive delay involved.

We have not had to claim at all so far and the NHS has dealt with everything in an acceptable time frame. So we have a major benefit not costing a fortune (expensive - yes but manageable) which is there for real problems not trotting off for physio every 5 minutes etc. Last thing you want is to threaten the benefit because of escalating premiums just because people want to feel special with "I go private" pretentious twaddle. If you are in a huge company then it probably does not make a great deal of difference of course.
