Towbar wiring help....
« on: 21 March 2012, 10:13:59 »

Hi all,

my local mechanic fitted my towbar and did his best with the electrics...

The problem I have is the rear parking sensors emit a constant tone when reversing now, where they didn't before, unless I was too close to an object.  ???

I gave him the wiring diagram for the towbar electrics and the omega diagram off the forum, but that doesn't show the reversing sensors..

Any ideas please?

TIA :y

No reason why the wiring would cause the park pilot system to emit a constant tone.  The system is only connected to the cars wiring harness for a +12v feed, Gnd and the Black/White wire that feeds the reversing lights.  Unless of course he's made a complete hash of the wiring, but then I'd except fuses to start blowing.

It's far more likely that the system's sensors are picking up the towbar itself, and registering it as an object.  Do you have a big backplate on the towbar by any chance?  :-\

Yep, either they are picking up a reflection from the tow bar of the wiring to the sensors has been knackered during the towbar fitting, I reckon.

I've been out and cleaned the sensors on the bumper, hoping it might of just been dirt..... no such luck :(

The bar doesn't appear to be in a position to be picked up and I don't have a back plate fitted either. The sensors are not even close to the towbar.

When I put it into reverse, it beeps once as normal, then I get the continuous tone :-\

The wife's Alhambra suffers the same way and that's why I fitted a removable hitch on it. With the bar in the sensors go bonkers

That indicates it thinks there is a fault. Left hand side by the lefthand rear light cluster, piossibly behind the boot protector panel ... there will be a lump of foam wrapped in tape ... in that lump are a black and a black/white wire not connected to anything, and a thing that looks like a blade fuse ... on mine it is purple. If you remove that item you will see a load of electronics .. it is actually a 350 Ohm resistor. With the item removed switch on the ignition and select reverse .. you will now get a series of beeps which will indicate which sensor the system thinks is at fault ..

Here are the codes ....

Thank you kindly Sir, I'll have a go tomorrow and see if I can resolve it. My mechanic is having the car tomorrow night to sort it out, but I'd like to have a go too :y

Right then, been out to the car. Found the "blade fuse" and pulled it out.

Ignition on, reverse selected.

I get: 2 sec tone followed by 3 beeps, 2 sec tone followed by 3 beeps etc. this continues four times +

Does this mean it's donald ducked? :-\

Sorry for the delay in getting back with the results :-[

Towbar wiring now sorted & it turns out that the connector for one of the reversing sensors were dirty, causing it to not work ::)

All sorted now and working spot on, thanks for all the help :y
