Extended cranking before firing..
« on: 27 March 2012, 19:21:03 »

I suspect I know what this is likely to be, but..

A couple of times recently - both when the car was cold - I've noticed it takes several cranks longer than normal to fire. In fact, before driving home tonight it took long enough that I thought it wasn't going to fire at all.. a good 4-5 seconds of cranking. Runs fine apart from that (and the stink of oil  :-[) although the idle is perhaps a little more 'wavery' than it was when I bought the car.

Prime suspect the crank position sensor?

Would be dead easy to change if it weren't for the big giant Jag in the way of using the pit.. ;D

What are your plans for the V12, Aaron?

It's in bits .. the front suspension/hubs and rear axle will be going in the kit car, the interior should make a nice three piece suite for the livingroom, engine will probably make a coffee table for someone and the rest will likely end up crushed.. which is probably for the best given the amount of rot in the firewall!

Hm, doing the extended cranking thing most of the time now - no engine light, of course (haven't checked for pending but not present codes, yet).. best I get that crank sensor ordered before it fails and lets me down somewhere!

Still seems to run fine once it's caught and fired, though.

Got the same problem myself. Keep asking the OOFer who I loaned my spare crank sensor many months ago to return it,but many broken promises and excuses later, still no sign of it. Thats what you get for helping people I suppose. We live and learn. >:(

Live and learn indeed, Albs!

Just called Andy and ordered one for myself, £40-something plus VAT so not too bad. Guess I know what I'll be doing on Saturday morning :)
