More car woes..! Astra 2.0DTI help please!
« on: 24 May 2012, 17:50:52 »

Hi all,

Hoping someone is able to help please? My 2001 2.0DTI astra blew a rad today, (temp DIDN'T go above 90'c) split a seam/vein so has a fine spray coming from the front of the rad - It looks like the rad had been damaged in the past so it could have been weakened by that?

I managed to stop it by using radseal/radweld just to get me home but... this doesn't look like water & Coolent!

It has an oily feel to it :( Guessing Head Gasket??

Water bottle is also a light brown, but no obvious lumps of oil (knowing oil and water don't mix) just a muddy like colour

Head looks clean, no ''mayo'' on head filler cap or dipstick, oil is clean and a light brown (changed not long ago)

So what do people think is going on here? could it just be a load of rust in the water??? (long shot!)

It runs and starts perfect every time, takes a while to hit a running temp of 85'c (ish) and only ever gets above 95'c on the hottest days in big traffic jams.

 ???

Cheers

Rob

Looks like old coolant and antifreeze. Sort the rad out then stick a bottle of coolant flush in, drain it and run it with fresh water going through (just leave a water return pipe going into a bucket), then fill with fresh antifreeze and water. Go from there. You'll have a clean system to start with then.

Ok, thanks guys - sounds a bit better than I thought! Would never have said old coolent would go that colour of feel as it does.

I'll change the rad over the weekend and flush it all out.

Cheers

Change the rad but if there are signs of quantities of oil derived mayo than it could the oil cooler.

If the coolant change history is questionable then it could well be old shitty coolant

Rads are not pricey for these about 60-70 tops.

Cheers Mark, any idea where I can get a rad as so far the cheapest has been a local motor factors at £115+vat. Cheers
