SWMBO's laptop running W7 has a virus.

On bootup and after entering the user password it displays a spoof screen from West Yorks Police inviting payment as the machine has apparently been used for an illegal purpose.

It seems she didn't renew the anti-virus s/w which came pre-loaded on it!

The machine will only respond to 2 options:

1) cntl/alt/delete - where it gives the options
2) power off

On 1) it gives the options you would expect and seems to function normally - but she only has one login id on the machine.
On 2) the screen clears and shows the desktop "normally" before shutting down.

Needless to say that the new AV s/w is sitting in a sealed box waiting to be installed.

have you tried running in safe mode?

try this http://www.avg.com/gb-en/avg-rescue-cd it may kill the virus and also its free.
download to your pc and burn to cd/usb stick and in boot up select cd/usb boot up
