Soz for crap title...

I thought I would post this as it's starting to bug me a little now.

On journeys when travelling at 60 upwards the car will occassionally (not all the time) seem like it's got caught by a gust of wind and I have to correct this and generally slow down. I say gust of wind as it feels like it's been pushed sideways and ''drifts'' slightly even though it's not windy.

It has been this way for quite a while.

I am having alignment done and camber adjustment (I think) next week as it was picked up on an alignment test that this needed doing... will it be this? I also am at 2mm on rear passenger tyre.

Any thoughts?

Check your tyre pressures and wheel balance for starters  :y

not be funny but have you got any damage on the tyres...and spin them up off the ground to see if they are round...i.e no bumps

i think chris picked up on the fact my rear passenger tyreis damaged a bit but to be honest there was a lot to take in that day with doing the springs and shocks so was a bit distracted  :-[

Hi Webby. If there is no pulling sensation through the steering wheel when this happens, then more than likely the issue is coming from the rear if the car.

So if follows that if you do feel a pull through the steering in time with the car wondering off line, then the problem will be at the front most likely.

Bushes, tyre condition and set up are the main factors.

Given we had time, I should have given the car a good look over really, but I did notice your rear bushes are not new, and tyres are old and worn with some damage on the left rear.

So one of, or a combination of those "could" give you the symptoms described. Most likely in fact but without seeing it I can't say for sure.

Tyre wear on a good set up car will give worn shoulder on the front. So a rounded profile, which ime means the front wants to roll off raised imperfections in the road.

The rear does the exact opposite, and wears the middle. So gives a squarer profile, this, ime, gives a tyre that wants to clime out of a team line for instance.

So, as I understand it, and I'm still learning Obviously, as the front and rear roll over the same bump or tram line, the front will react differently to the rear. Front will want to sit in a tramline, and the rear will want to clime out of it.

That's a massively symplistic view, and there's numerous combinations of worn parts and set variations that give loads of odd characteristics. But hopefully the above will give an idea of what to expect as a cars handling degrades.

Solution ime is.

Rectify steering and suspension faults.
Set up.
Fit new tyres.(not Falkens, not a stable tyre)

Cheers Chris, much obliged for the detailed reply  :y

i dont recall the steering wheel turning when the car drifts but i can't be certain of that. it's booked in next week at WIM. I think the chap will be doing camber adjustment at the front. i e mailed him and he's aware of the problem so hopefully will resolve that too :)

did all my tyres look worn to you? i thought it was just the tread on the L/R that i was aware of as i check the tread quite frequently. if so, could be a big 4 tyre job  ;D

thanks again mate  :y

You should be ok fitting new rear tyres now you have new shocks and springs on the back. If the rear donut bushes need changing they dont seem to affect the set up too much, so we can do those later if the set up doesn't fix it.

I don't recall the front tread depth but the tyres themselves where old. Not likely to affect your problem though.

Next time the car veers off, make a note of the feel of the steering wheel at the time. If pulls AND drifts off, or just drifts off with no feeling of pull in which case the driver will have to steer it back straight again.

See how you go. :)
