Try going through these steps first to find if it is the alternator at fault :y

thanks had a look, still think its alternator, no adnormal drain on battery, and just put new one on not long back. put fan on number 2 and radio on with light battery volts drop to just under 12v, at idel. charges fine with out a drain on it. but still just over 12v. used to be fine with no problems has a good dance around with volts when driving.

Sounds to me like your alternator's on the way out or you have a wiring fault (check the crimping of the battery terminals and security of the grounding straps between engine, body and battery negative terminal.

Very seldom will the car draw the full rated output of the alternator, so I don't see the point of upgrading it. The manufacturers would have specified it to suit the electrical spec of the car when new.

What you can try is to measure the alternator output at the terminal on the back of the alternator itself, just to make sure. If it's low there, the alternator is the issue. Tricky to get to but conclusive. :y

Alternators can be refurbed yourself quite easily. Just a couple of bearings and a regulator pack would probably see it working again.

I guess the pricing is just down to which parts are more commonplace, and therefore cheaper to stock.
