One of the things that could go in your favour is insight into the error. One of my friends, who is a solicitor, was talking about this at a get together a few years ago. Allegedly in the SE, the judges look kindly on people who have realised the error of their ways and self refer themselves to a speed awareness course, thereby demonstrating a willingness to learn from the mistake. Obviously this is only hearsay, but I can understand the logic behind it, rather than just turning up and begging, you have proactively demonstrated the desire to curb your speed/learn from your mistake etc.

Once again hearsay, but worth thinking about. Remember there is no point retrospectively thinking about what could have been done to mitigate the punishment once it has been dished out.
