Omega 2001 FL rear differential very hot!
« on: 14 August 2012, 11:16:52 »

Hello! I am asking little bit information regarding the Omega rear differential liftetime and reliability.

Current Omega(2001 2,2 bensin, manual, 24000KM milage) differential becomes very hot after 100-200km of drive, there is also hot oil smell coming behind of car. Differential is so hot, that you cant hold a hand on it.

Oil level is checked and ther is no huge leakage noted around the differential itself. Only notable thing is that 70-80km/h there is slight vibation in car, coming maybe from differential or shaft. Could be bearings inside the differential?

Anybody has experiance how long Omega differential will last and what to change there and how big investment it will be?  Any help welcome.

The scrapyard has avaiable  asecond hand differential from Omega  2003 2,2 bensin, ATM 135000miles. Can this be fitted to my Omega(transmission ratio?) wwithout a problem or it is wise to change the worn out parts in that differetnai las well?

Cheers,
Olzz

I would say it's normal for it to run too hot to touch after a decent amount of driving and I'd be very surprised if it has developed any problems at that low a mileage.

OK, so a few more miles. ;D

Still doesn't sound like much is wrong, though. The smell of oil is likely to be that the pinion seal is weeping and throwing some oil onto the exhaust system, IMHO, so have a look for marking of the exhaust level with the front of the diff.

If you want to satisfy yourself that it isn't getting too hot you could check the temperature with temperature sensitive "tell tale" stickers or use an infra-red thermometer against the diff casing just after a long drive.

They do get warm, having been under the car several hours since the car was last used and noticing considerable heat still radiating from the dif.

An oil level top up might be worthwhile though, as I can't see the 2.2 stressing the dif too much on power in standard form.

Alot of towing can give them a work out though.
