2.2 auto estate gearbox oil level check

What is correct way to check auto gearbox oil level and can you advise as to the location of the gearbox ECU

ECU is up behind the drivers kick panel under the dash.

Don't change gearbox ecu until proven faulty. Only ever seen 2 faulty gearbox ECUs, so ignore any mechanics pointing fingures are Omega ECUs.
