Tractor issue

Hello everyone, been a while! A Friend of mine had 2.5td auto, but recently the gearbox lights are all on and when he selects drive, the engine either smokes and/or the car cuts out. Any ideas?

gearbox ecu or the box itself has selfdestructed :-\

mileage? as said could be gearbox, could also be selector switch gummed up if you are lucky!!
