The problem is, the 4wd options on most modern cars don't hide the fact that it's essentially set up as a front wheel drive car with a few token LbFt of torque sent to the rears. Yes, it might have better traction than a FWD car (i'd hope so with 260 BHP), but it's bound to have a rock hard suspension setup, understeer, etc.

Don't understand this - why all the FWD bias - even with 4WD - even part time off roaders are going wrong wheel drive for two wheel drive
A proper RWD car like the meega will have a longitudal engine buried as far back as possible within the engine bay with a hefty gearbox behind it, contribution to balanced raod holding (and annoying HBV access...).
A FWD car turned into AWD will either have a transverse engine (e. g. Golf) or will have the engine leaning forward over the front axle to allow the front wheels to be driven (e.g. Audi). Yes, with clever suspension settings and some computer wizardry this can be compensated for, but there is nothing to replace the sure-footed experience of driving a heavy RWD car that has been designed and screwed-on properly old-school style!
Said that, I may have to venture back into the FWD domain after the meega, unless I find a decent-priced Merc... Sorry, but I am no BMW or Jag fan.
In which case I may consider a Saab.... not straying too far away from
the Omega as the Saab is essentially a better-built Vectra... well no exactly, but near enough.
