No igition/ dash lights, cranks but does not fire. Help
« on: 10 September 2012, 20:22:12 »

My dad has just phoned he is broken down and we are diagnosing over the phone.

Car is 2002 2.6 Elite. Engine cut out, no igntion. All dash / ignition lights inop. Loads of battery life, cranks over fine just not firing, the car doesnt know the ignition is turned on it seems.

Also, since locking car with key, key transponder is not recognised, alarm contunies to sound when ignition turned on, again car doesnt seem to know the igntion is turned on.

Looks like its going to have to be recovered, but any help gratfully received.

Dash fuse ?
Ignition relay ?

I've not got the car infront of me a google has nothing.

Thanks in advance

Paul.

First thing I'd check are the LARGE fuses in the little triangular box by the battery .. 80 amp IIRC ... they control the heart of the system as all power is routed through them.

Yep, check fuses first. The problem sounds like the switched live isn't coming on. Could be a switch but unlikely. When the key is turned to the on position does the stereo come on? (assuming it is wired correctly)

Where has he broken down?

Thanks very much guys, maybe a mod can delete the other thread.

Well I went out to him and towed it back. Fuse 15 under the steering wheel gone.

Tried new fuse, she fired up, fuse popped again about 10 secs later, must be a dead short.

SO . . . . . . what else is on Fuse 15, I'm hoping it just a case of removing the siren or somthing, but incase its wires and I need to test everything looking for a short, can anyone help me narrow it down.

Many thanks to all that posted reply's.

According to the handbook I have here -
Reverse lamps
Level control
Alarm system
Seat/mirror adjustment
Information display
Heated rear seats
indicators
Instrument illumination
Cooling fan
Headlamp range adjustment

Quite a list.Might be worth trying the powersounder first,as dbug suggested. :-\

My understanding is that there is no fuse protection for the power sounder (which is why it tends to catch fire when it goes wrong).

Might be worth checking for chewed up wires under the seats.

And the cure...

Mine was the drivers heated seat live feed shorting out on the seat frame because a plastic protector had been put on the wrong side of the metal frame. You can disconnect the heated seat down by the seat adjustment switches, but be careful the air bag and belt tensioner go through the loom at this point..

Thats really helpful.

This was my car for 2 years and was faultlessly reliable, sold it to my dad at mates rates, and he drove it twice before it broken down.  :-[

I am a master tech for Audi so electrical diag is my thing, BUT I dont have TIS and with no wiring diagram, have nothing to go on other than the handbook which apears to be wrong.

Plan is to install my home made blade fuse test bulb,  and see if it lights up (dead short) hoping it does, then start checking it out by disconnecting possible offending items, the diagrams would be good here to follow the path from the fuse and try it at various connectors, but without it, I will just have to unplug consumers.

I know it has a failed headlamp level motor (its full of water, has being saying dip beam floored vision for ages) so hope its somthing simple like that. Does sound very similar to your problem Weds, and my Dad has the seat in a different possition to me, so that could be a factor.

I will keep an eye on the tread incase anyone can offer sugestions on wiring diagrams without TIS, can you do screen dumps ??

But I wont have time to look at the car until the weekend, so there will be little update until then.

Thanks again to all of you for your support espcially Weds, top man.

Paul.

FIXED !!  :)

It was indeed the LH headlamp leveling motor. I knew it was faulty and had a bit of water in it, I have a spare set of complete face lift Xenon headlights which I gave to my Dad with the car. Knowing I would have to swap the motors before the next MOT. But I had no idea this issue could result in a complete loss of igntion / break down. Well worth remembering for everyone out there.

With the headlamp motor unpluged the fuse didnt blow, with the headlamp motor pluged in, as soon as the lights are turned on, the fuse pops and it cuts out.

New head lamp motor fitted and plugged in, all is well.

Thanks to all who replied, got me on the right track before I even looked at the car.
