My best mate Rik and I started around 10:30. Just finished. What an ordeal that was.
That was with the fairing/tank/seat already removed, and it hasn't gone back on.
The forks fell out surprisingly easily, which was something that I was worried about. The bearings fell out as expected. The shells.... ....well.... ....hammers, swearing, cursing, custom tool manufacturing, more hammers, cursing, welding, hammers, swearing, more welding, more hammers and an awful lot of swearing. But we got the shells out of the frame. Then onto the bearing/shell on the yoke. Swearing, custom tool making, hammers, swearing, welding... ...well, you get the picture.
About 7pm we had all the bearings and shells off. Then the fun and games of getting the new shells in the frame. That wasn't fun. Threaded rod trick, complete waste of time. More hammers, more swearing, done.
Forks and wheel all back on, along with tank. Just fairing to do now, then book back in for MOT.
My mate Rik and I always have a giggle when we do jobs together, so although it was hard work, frustrating, and took longer (much!) than expected, we had a bloody good laugh, and I have to say the entire job was thoroughly enjoyable. Sure as hell glad I didn't attempt it on my own.
