I'd say that Rallying is still immensly popular in each and every one of the countries that the WRC circus visits.
The problem is that we live in a Global Market as far as Manufacturers are concerned and the TV and Media  coverage is utterly abysmal .
If you look at the footage from rallying in the late 90's and early 00's the coverage was much much more comprehensive ,exciting and stimulating ,exactly what sells cars and that is why they are in it .
The visual impact of continuous  in car camera footage and a sweaty uninterested  driver being interviewed at the end of a stage is a poor comparison .
What it needs is a total overhaul similar to F1 to reinvigorate the whole concept , but not by Bernie , Please.....

Agreed. It's a much more interesting spectator sport than F1, for example, if the coverage is done well.

And.. as a mate of mine is helping out with the internet publicity for a certain very fast Fin, I should probably leave a citation. This is in a proper Ford rally car, though. ;)

Sadly, rallying has been on the decline since the end of the group B days, todays cars are very tame compared to what they used to be , also turning the nationwide RAC rally into Rally GB and then running it in Wales has hardly done the sport any favours :(
