OMEGA 2.6 v6 2001 CUTS OUT WHEN SLOWING TO A STOP
« on: 04 November 2012, 22:36:29 »

Hi All. Just wondering if anyone has encountered a problem on their Omega cutting out when slowing to a stop. This seem to happen now and again especially when coming up to a roundabout or slowing in traffic. The engine management light does not come on so even the dealer has no idea but they are trying to sell me either an ECU or a Throttle Body all at expensive cost but with no guarantee that it will solve the problem. Also if parking in town doing some shopping when doing a stop start manouvre into a space and with the engine revs low the car then decides to revv on its own between 400rpm to 1,000 rpm and then cuts out. The car always starts straight away and the problem may not happen for days and than may happen 4 to 5 times in one journey. The car never cuts out when just starting from cold always seems to be when it is at normal temp. A guy lives around the corner from me has an omega 2.0  petrol 1998 and cut out in the outside lane and also had cutting out problem at junctions - like me. He had his crank sensor done that solved the cut out whilst driving but did not solve the revving then cutting out at junctions issue. He replaced his MAF but to no avail. Somebody said it could be blocked breather but on the V6 not sure wher they are in relation to a 2.0. My car has done 80000 with cam belts done. I am beginning to get worried as i have a family and worry that it will cut out anytime at a dangerous place. Problem is making car become unreliable and no longer makes journeys enjoyable. Please help. :-\

Read the Howto and do the pedal trick to read codes.  Post codes up here.
Best guestimate - dodgy crank sensor HTH  :y

.... Please help. :-\

First off, here's the guide for cleaning the breathers on a V6 http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90653.0 never a bad idea to clean them.  :y Your throttle is slightly different from that in the guide because you don't have a throttle cable.
Cleaning/inspecting the throttle assembly would be a good thing too, it could be sticking due to a build up of crud  :-\  :-\  :-\ There's a cleaning & porting guide here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90624.0 but if you're not sure of what you're doing, just clean and don't dismantle the butterflies, otherwise you'll make things far far worse.  ;)

Firstly, no way on earth will it be the ECU, and I very much doubt it's the throttle body. The dealer is guessing, so disregard his advice.

I have seen 2.6s sometimes idle high when the MAF sensor is on its' way out. Stalling is more likely to be an issue with the crank sensor, though, so read the codes using the pedal trick and post here. If you can get it to a Tech 2 some more diagnosis can be done, but the codes would be a good starting point.
