Yes .... you have to, you need the MOT to tax it. Just book it in before you set off.  :y  :y

and don't go 400 miles out of your way ...  there is no "law" on this but it appears you should go by a "direct route"... :)

I wonder how far it's possible to 'manipulate' this?  :-\ Years ago, my car failed on emissions (not my Omega  ;)), so the tester re-booked it in for later in the afternoon to give me chance for an Italian Tune Up, which involved a lap of the M60  ::)  ::)  ::)

I did that to mine today, and twice went from one junction on the M20 to another at high speed.  Apart from the speed, I knew if the police were to  see me when driving away from the MOT garage I would be breaking the law.  You take your chances at times.   If you are lucky you get back to the Test centre with no problems, but be unlucky and you are in the shxt! :o :o

I will be taking it for mot earlier next year but the car will be insured , i guess thats the minimum legal requirement and as long as its pre-booked for the mot . Also does the car need to be insured if its SORN but parked off the road on the driveway  :-\

No need to insure if it's kept on private property

You've got to be able to leave the test station to either take your car home or elsewhere for repairs.  ;)

But not before the Test Andy.  You have to prove to the police that you have the car booked into a garage for repairs / MOT, and which garage that is. If, as I was twice, going away from that garage that had the booking for both, I could hardly claim I was doing anything but driving a car without an MOT, and without a legal reason.

Yes, I could have lied and said I was going home, but as I had gone onto the M20 which I do not have to do for the registered address for my vehicle, then I would have had a very awkward situation!  Of course, even then I could have been allowed to go back towards the garage, but the law is strict on that, and if the PC is a stickler for "the word" of the law, as most must be, then I could have been in trouble. They could have also said my insurance was invalid in those circumstances.

In short you are taking a risk by deviating from the exact word of the law and I have seen what happens when I have been out with police patrols. ;)

As long as it's SORN'd.

However, you need insurance to drive it to MOT. Tax is a grey area.
