Some of the views expressed in this thread are "interesting" to say the least.
Having visited, and made friends with, many Americans during my long association with the C130 and the RAF, the matter was discussed on many occasions.
Now, as an indicator of "american" culture it is highly flawed, as the "sample" is very narrow, being mostly American service personnel, but we did meet a large number of well educated, intelligent civilians as well.
From memory .... without doubt, virtually EVERY family had a hand gun both in the house and in every car owned, the majority of these being self loading pistols, just a few had rifles and these were always used for game/hunting. If memory serves me correctly .. some 90%-ish had sent the wife/kids to lessons on safety/handling and obviously range work.
Not a single person supported the ownership of assault weapons and multishot magazines, these were seen as pointless and a nutters" choice.
In general the NRA was seen as varying from a right wing bunch of idiots to a commercial syndicate for the sale of weapons and nothing else.
The "right to bear arms" argument was very rarely mentioned ... the sole purpose of having a weapon was a perceived "self defence/family defence" argument.
Most of the women involved wished the weapons were NOT in the house/car wherever...
Strange ideas to us .. but "normal" to the guys involved ..
If I had an answer to the problem I'd probably be worth a fortune .. but I don't and I'm not ..
