I wonder how many of these assault rifle owners go off into the woods and when they see a deer just spray a magazine off in the general direction, rather than taking a well aimed  considered shot to kill?  ???

as the old saying, sometimes " hunter becomes the hunt" ;D

and I'll ask why someone pays 900$ for an army automatic rifle..  ???

Some of the views expressed in this thread are "interesting" to say the least.

Having visited, and made friends with, many Americans during my long association with the C130 and the RAF, the matter was discussed on many occasions.

Now, as an indicator of "american" culture it is highly flawed, as the "sample" is very narrow, being mostly American service personnel, but we did meet a large number of well educated, intelligent civilians as well.

From memory .... without doubt, virtually EVERY family had a hand gun both in the house and in every car owned, the majority of these being self loading pistols, just a few had rifles and these were always used for game/hunting. If memory serves me correctly .. some 90%-ish had sent the wife/kids to lessons on safety/handling and obviously range work.

Not a single person supported the ownership of assault weapons and multishot magazines, these were seen as pointless and a nutters" choice.

In general the NRA was seen as varying from a right wing bunch of idiots to a commercial syndicate for the sale of weapons and nothing else.

The "right to bear arms" argument was very rarely mentioned ... the sole purpose of having a weapon was a perceived "self defence/family defence" argument.

Most of the women involved wished the weapons were NOT in the house/car wherever...

Strange ideas to us .. but "normal" to the guys involved ..

If I had an answer to the problem I'd probably be worth a fortune .. but I don't and I'm not .. :(

My view is a well trained good man with gun and a safety gate to every school. If impossible to do then make harder personal restrictions psychological test included. I don't really believe in statistics they can be manipulated easily, stats makers catch out any detail they need to prove the justice of customer ( who a business partner too) .

Entwood, there must be a starting point to solve the problem.. if its never tried and people continue to be armed continously there will never be a solution.. and people wil continue to do die ..

So a week after the Newtown school massacre in Conneticut, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has called for an armed guard at every school in America, saying "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun"  Basically they're saying that the answer to gun violence on US streets is... more guns!!  :-\

This on the same day that 3 innocent people were shot and killed in rural Pennsylvania in an apparent motiveless random shooting....  :'(

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/21/us-usa-shooting-pennsylvania-idUSBRE8BK0Y520121221

To be honest I don't know what the answer is, as the culture in the US surrounding guns is very different to here, but I don't think that armed guards in every school is the answer.  However, by all accounts sales of semi-automatic assault rifles have rocketed this week as people snap them up before any new legislation is passed banning such weapons... Crazy!!!  :o

Imo guns in a modern civilization life is a definite no no.. but for America a quick solution may be to use armed security as I said before.. here also guns are a part of our culture, but honestly speaking a culture existing with guns in my view is not a culture.. its a barbaristic tribe instead of a civilization..

Yep. Just outlaw guns. I don't see what the objection is. Ok, people say they want to arm themselves, but if guns were not easily obtainable like in other cultures, then there would not be a need for everyone to have a gun under their pillow. In western Europe, people generally speaking don't have guns in their house / cars, because guns laws prevent it. Yeah, you get the odd madman, like in Oslo, which unfortunately is always going to be the case.
As said in another post, it's a mentally, a culture, a habit - one that nobody really ever questions. A typical example of the human nature of "we've always done it this way, so we won't change"

and there lies the crux of America's problem is that these weapons are available to 'nutters' and for whatever reason (probably profits and votes) there has been little will for change.  Can you imagine what this country would be like if assault rifles could be bought with a cursory phone call from the dealer to the local police, with the amount of nutters and idiots we have here?   :-\

My friend lives in Houston and said to me a while ago that when driving you never flash, beep, yell at or give anyone the finger if someone cuts you up or are driving like an idiot, because they may well have a gun and you just never know.....  :o  My mate's not exactly a shrinking violet either!!  ;)

I wonder if in the wake of the Conneticut school massacre, George W Bush has had any regrets about letting the ban on assault rifles lapse....  ???

some years ago, we were together a friend walking.. when passing a road,a young driver hit my friend (slowly) , then they start to argue.. finally my friend lost the control and hit to his door and the young driver took pistol from the glove box..  in that moment from the open window I caught the pistol together the drivers girl friend , we struggled a bit and took the gun >:(  thats just a simple example.. many drivers here use their guns and shoot the other because they want to pass first..  so to cut short, I'll never approve/accept guns in a society whatever reasoning is done.. let alone the automatic rifles..
