You sure the caravan's brakes aren't dragging?  :-\ :-\ I assume your car drives OK when not towing

The gearbox ECU does take a load input, so if its putting the engine under more load, will hold a lower gear.

Not sure if the caravanners can comment if the firmware updates are worthwhile on the 3.0l auto for towing?

The problem seems to occur when the pikey house is attached,so in my professional opinion, the way to stop the problem re-occuring is dont tow a pikey house ;D
one less on the road he hopes :)

My 3.2 holds third for miles when under load with the van on the back. My van weighs in at around 1600kg and anything other than flat ground forces it to drop down out of top gear. Quite frustrating at times as the mpg suffers. Mine does stay in top gear at motorway speed (60mph) when the load is 'rolling' on a flat road but the slightest incline knocks it down to third again.
The torque up hills is superb though.  ;)

Has it not gone in to top gear at all when towing Ken?  :-\

You can fool the system into dropping into 4th at 50 mph quite easily, just back off the throttle very gently and it will drop in.... then be light with the right foot and it will stay in 4th.... if you need to power up a hill or past something it drops to 3rd easily, you then repeat the process once past the obstruction.  Because the auto box "adapts" to the way you drive, if you are always heavy with the right foot it will learn to stay in 3rd, and can be difficult to coax out.... be gentle and it will soon "learn" to use 4th as well

And that's a 3.2 towing 1680 Kgs... :)
