Andy, next time you go on a reasonably lengthy motorway journey, set your cruise control for 56mph. Count the number of times you pull out to pass something, only to find that you can't.

I think you will be quite surprised...

What a load of utter rubbish. Ok I agree you might have to wait a while but lets face it your probably only following another LGV probably doing half a mile an hour slower than you so the wait to overtake is hardly going to make a massive time difference to your journey. IMO a lot of LGV drivers are terrible considering it's their profession, even basics like mirror signal manoeuvre go out the window if they have to lift their foot of the throttle. If it was down to me they would all be forced to stay in the inside lane, after all they should all be doing 56MPH. Just my opinon ::)

Why do you need a 3.0 if Hgv's are looming up behind you? Get on with it lad! ;)

Hgv's drivers need to do the same, and use their mirrors... Oh wait that's not fair, they do. Then over take ANYWAY!  >:(

In all fairness chris I have a great respect for HGV's as a lot of my mates are profesional drivers, and if they were in front or by the side of me I will allways slow and give them the right of way especially after seeing some idiot taxi try to sneak past an artic on a roundabout whilst the rest of us gave the HGV plenty of space, the result was the HGV swiftly drove across the bonnet of the car (dare I say it even looked like he did it on purpose) but had I have been a witness to the accident I think I would have supported the HGV driver.

In this case chris I thought I was more than clear of the HGV when I slowed for the roundabout but as I swung left he momentarily wouldnt be in my mirrors due to the angle I was at, I put him down to driving too fast and being lucky not to have caused an accident.

Also putting annother notch on lessons learnt (dont under estimate how fast an empty HGV can catch up)

Trouble is, although all the trucks are supposed to be limited to 56mph,  the limiters are inconsistant.

The point of my suggestion was simply to highlight the fact that whilst a car should easily maintain 56mph using cruise control, a truck might not :-\

Also limiters only control the speed thst a driver can push the vehicle to. Down hill, such as where the M40 drops into Oxfordshire, even a modest truck will reach 65+ left to its own devices. Given the variations of weight and power, it is of little surprise that  a faster truck at the bottom of the slope might well be the slowest one at the top.

If people didn't try to pass slower vehicles, we would all end up doing 40 everywhere, waiting for the person sat in the middle lane to die of boredom ::)

Which is what happens when and LGV is overtaking another LGV clogging the middle overtaking lane for miles at a time ::) ;D

Alot of the time true Pete, but every so often, that truck at the front is sat behind a car, just wishing it could use the outside lane to go round it ;D

It should be the law that an HGV being overtaken backs off a bit to allow the overtaking vehicle past.  It's not always the fault of the overtaking truck..  ::)

Be alot less of a problem if trucks weren't limited...

Although, sensibly, there should then be a power to weight ratio of say 13bhp per tonne of GVW to be able to use lane 2 and say 40 bhp per tonne to use lanes 3and 4. That way all the underpowered supermarket trollies stay in lane one out of the way, and the rest of us can just get on with it :y

No chance of that Al as limiters have to be on more and more vehicles.  7.5 tonners now, white vans tomorrow, motorbikes.....  :(

Dont mind limiters at all, the one on my Elite apparently kicks at 155MPH, sadly there are no roads or tracks legal or suitable to test it.  ::)
