dashboard says oil low..
« on: 27 January 2013, 19:47:52 »

Hi
the dashboard on my car tells me now and again that i am low on oil..
when we check it, it isnt low at all.
My boyfriend checked where there could be an oil leak and found a plug like thing on top of the sump.
This seems to be loose.
does this screw in? or is it held in with a bung of some sort?
There is not alot of oil leaking at all and he has checked the sump itself and there does not appear to be a leak from there or any where else.
can anyone help?
Sarah

Does this message appear when you are cruising at fairly high speed or all the time, if at higher speeds then you will find that the oil will need topping up to the high mark on the stick no more. if all the time then it could a poorly oil pressure switch but more normally it will need a splash of oil needed to bring it upto the mark.

Does the oil warning light(red oil can) light up on the main cluster?

Ps welcome to the forum Sarah. :)
PPs Only use gen vx semi synth oil.

Hi guys,
there's plenty of oil in it... and no dashboard light comes up so we think its the sensor on the sump..
its wobbly and may be letting out pressure.
there is a slight oil leak which we think is coming from around the sensor..
so may try some sort of sealant...

It may be the sensor, but pressure & amount of oil are two separate things.  ;)

Sarah,
Expect to see this message on a cruise if the oil level is at or below halfway between min and max on dipstick. Try to keep nearer to Max on dipstick.

Hope that helps.

I find that if the oil drops to half way between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick then the "oil lack" message is likely to come up on the display.

The round thing on top of the sump is just an electrical connector. There is a rubber sealing ring on top of the sump and a circlip inside that should hold it firmly enough to make an oiltight seal. Another wire runs inside the sump to a float switch screwed to the bottom of the oil pan. Both the V6s I have owned were oil stained round this connector but not badly enough to worry about.

Dont try any type of sealant, find out if the circlip is in place, if not replace it and check again. are you sure the level is correct, it can be hard to see the level on the stick sometimes esp if the oil is clean.

might be some members nr to you who can have a gander and advise you further.
