Reset the MID and see what happens on your next trip. If i reset the MID whilst sitting in traffic it can show anything from 7.8mph on a long wait.   
I've reset it and it still about the same :(
Take it for a drive on a main road say a duel carriageway and see what it changes to

if you want a repeatable test you can compare have a look at my mpg thread http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=108869.msg1362683#msg1362683 It's for a V6 manual though.  If you try it add your figures to the thread.
