Timing Belt Kits
« on: 22 April 2013, 23:29:42 »

Hi. I was hoping someone might be able to help me on this.

I have a 3.0 V6 Elite, which I got last year and knew that it wasnt long before the timing belt was due to be replaced by the service record and receipts it had. Every now and then I have been looking at prices and brands to choose, as I dont want rubbish.

I thought Id enquire about a price in the local dealer just to get an idea whilst I was there, and he said that it as coming up with 3 different kits for the X30XE engine, and it would be best to check which was for mine. Looking into it the actual timing belts in the kits must all be the same, so Im guessing it is something to do with the tensioner part of the kit. Would this be correct?

I had to buy a roller tensioner for the auxillary belt before Xmas from a different dealer that was closer to where I work. They seemed to be a bit more knowledgable, as they must have been able to see that there had been different part numbers for this, but it had been superseded 3 times.

Could this be the case with the timing belt kit, and does that mean that they will be suitable for any X30XE engine? And what is the difference if not?

Thanks for any help
Andrew

Pm or ring Andy C :y his details are at the top of the Parts section.

He is the parts manager for Drive Vauxhall in East Anglia, but offers reasonable discounts and will post most things out to you :y

Also a very good DVD available from the OOF Shop :y

Get a Contitech kit (OEM supplier) from buypartsby http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/buy/VAUXHALL/OMEGA/3.0/1998/__/48/service-parts/major-service/timing-belts/ - you just need to check youe engine number.  Buy the kit incl tensioners, as its normally the tensioners that fail :y

I've fitted a number of the Contitech kits and found no issues over the life of the kit (40K miles) :y :y

Cheaper than Vx (which will be gates or contitech), even at TC prices

There are only two kits for the 3.0 (not three, the third is for later 2.6/3.2's)

Yours will be the later variant of the two (01 marking on the tensioner backing plate, earlier one has EB).

The major difference on all of them is the tensioner backing plate which you can re-use as the tensioners and idler are the same (make sure you use the original spacers). The later 3.2/2.6 did away with the adjustable lower idler roller but, you can fit the adjustable one.

So in a nut shell, any kit can be made to fit any engine without compromising the install

Had about 4 or 5 of these Contitech kits now - makes "servicing" the cam belt a not too expensive operation.  Never had any issue with them.  Bearings are all SKF.
