TD Fuel leak
« on: 29 July 2013, 19:52:11 »

Coming home today, I noticed the rear window on the Estate was getting a bit murky, but after a wash wipe, it got dirty again, all in dry weather??? After stopping to investigate I find I have a fuel leak from somewhere at the back of the engine, dripping out underneath and being flicked up by the wheels, hence dirty window. I shall get it up on stands tomorrow to investigate the cause. I have not done anything to the engine or fuel system in the last few weeks. The last major work was having the AR35 fitted. As there is no sign of any leakage from the obvious points under the bonnet, I am guessing that it must be the fuel feed line from the tank. Are there any obvious feed pipe connections at the rear of the engine??? :-\ :-\ :-\

Have you checked the fuel filter? These are prone to leaking if you don't seat them right. Have you done anything fuel-wise lately? I can't think of anything else that could leak that amount. Obviously the leak-off pipes etc are all dry?

As quoted in my OP:
1. no visible under bonnet leaks, which includes fuel filter, injectors, pump and accessible fuel lines.
2. No work done on the engine recently.

It sounds like a fuel line then, they are not under a great deal of pressure, but I have never replaced one myself.

Usual leak points on the TD are the leak-off pipes, the unions on the back of the pump, or the metal pipes where they go behind the head (they come out of their clips, then rub through on cam cover.

That sounds possible. I'll post result of investigation tomorrow. :y

What was the outcome of the fuel we saw collecting on the front of the engine area a few weeks (or maybe months) ago - was that a leakoff hose? :y

That was water James, which runs down the cam cover grooves and collected in the #1 injector well, as it still does in the rain. :y :y :y

Result! The leak was from the leak off pipe - a piece of sh*t braided aftermarket - from #1 injector where it connected to the pump, quite difficult to see under the manifold as it ran around the union then dripped onto the chassis and off at the rear. This pipe was fitted when I did my gloplugs a few months ago, and although tight when fitted, is quite sloppy on the spigot now, even allowing for diesel lube. >:(
According to my friendly dealer, the OE pipe - no longer avlbl from VX, although I expect LR or BMW do it - should be 3.0mm internal Dia., yet my OE pipe (I've had the car from a few months old) is stamped 3.2mm. :-\
Pipe for the 2.2DTi is avlbl, and is 3.2mm Dia., which I shall use.

Should anyone else require it, the Part number is 93181131, £17.68 +VAT per meter. :y

Told ya to change it when ya did 'em glow-plugs and destroyed the inlet manifold in the process a while back ... tut tut ...

Happy outcome though! :y :y :y

That's exactly what I did, unfortunately!!!(See my second sentence above).

I have now replaced the pipe with the OE pipe listed above, which, in every respect, including markings, is identical to the pipe already fitted as leak-offs to the rest of the injectors. Close examination of the removed braided pipe shows that it has two splits in the rubber at the leaking end. This was pipe purchased less than 3 months ago. Unfortunately, as I bought two similar lots from different places., I can't remember which batch it was from. >:(

Moral, stick to GM in this instance. :y

Well, at least its an easy fix :).

Not many places these tend to leak from.
