Hi Guys,

I'm in serious need of some expert advice.  Changed a rear break pipe today, cut out old and put in new piece, pleased with my work.  Started to bleed system. Did rear nearside as per haynes then moved to front offside.  Bleed nipple sheared off    (how could I have been so stupid ), now have a big problem.  How do I get the remnents out of hole? or do I?  options are.

1:  Could drill out but don't know how far to go and what thread size is.
2:  Buy replacement one off Ebay.
3:  Buy new.

Interestingly when I moved car back to parking spot there was no sign of fluid on the caliper. I'm guessing that is because the bleed nipple is still in the down position.  Can't see leaving it as is, as an option, as need to bleed entire system, and, wouldn't want it to "let go " whilst on the road.

Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Might be a legitimate use of an easy out

But if there is NO sign of fluid, then you don't currently have a problem (apart from not bleeding that caliper)

It won't suddenly start leaking just because the top has sheared off

Can you buy/borrow an easy out and try that first. 

Edit: Must type faster. 

My success rate with easy outs has been very good recently, although I have sheared one in the past. Then I had to get that bugger out as well.

Easyouts have their place but for brake nipples I like left hand drills at slow speed, particularly if you have been previously working the nipple (oo eeerrr missis!).

Thanks for the advice guys.

  If I manage to get the remnents out, what type/size of bleed nipple will i need as a replacement. Have been looking on ebay and there are a multitude of different thread sizes etc.

The calipers I've got are standard M8 course (1,25 pitch), but MarksDTm says there are others

How about measuring the nipple on the caliper on the otherside of the car?

Thanks for the input.  Will have another look at it tomorrow, got a neighbour who has some easy outs.

need a replacement caliper. I have piles of them

Bad luck. I have broken off several over the years. I have learned to loosen them very gingerly, with a long (9mm?) socket and a T shaped handle. If it does turn easily with little effort I hammer the caliper around the nipple area to free it. I try again. If it breaks off I change the caliper. I stock spares for the purpose.

Your solution is to change the caliper. Take up the offer above.

I never dared apply heat, bearing in mind the inflammable fluid and rubber seals. What a winp am I.

would'nt let you do my rover brakes then you got no choice but to apply heat on them---
as said never had one snap--so far anyway-use a piece of steel as a heat shield-or cut up can--stops flame hitting seals etc
