Happy as a pig in poo.....
« on: 03 October 2013, 22:26:03 »

Now then everyone,

I have owned my dark blue 52 reg 2.2 DTi CDX for just one week now. Posted a Hi in the newbie section (would be rude not to I hear you say) and today the car (called Big Barrie or BB for short) is running like - well - like a dream.

The brakes were poor I thought even though it is a big car - read the FAQ & so got the garage to blead them and change the fluid as well as check all pads and discs at all four corners (the rear pads had got stuck in the carrier through lack of use so the fronts were seemingly doing most if not all the stopping despite being diagonally linked). Now I have more confidence in them. I have a 53 reg Panda too which in comparison stops very quickly but as detailed in threads here, that could be due to over servo'd and being a much smaller and lighter car, infact BB feels huge in comparison (steering, braking, parking - yep - parking must get the hang of that rather than just randon abandoning).

EML light came on just after brake service but I am guessing that was because brake fluid top up container was taken off and may have dislodged something - anyway loss of turbo for a few secs and then everything alright again - happy days, so will just double check all connections at the back or the garage will as I tend to know about stuff but don't do it for lack of confidence reasons.

Have read quite a lot of the threads and hope to do a fair amount of preventative maintenance - clean EGR, take out Glow plugs before they weld into engine, clean injectors - I am showing off here can you tell and I must have a go at sorting the bonnet pull before it gets TOO late.

BB is an absolute delight - love the Xenon's - have them on just for the fun as DRL in sunny [sic] Hartlepool, never owned a car with heated seats before so like that a lot - anything above position 2 gives me burns though...love the electric sunroof too, climate control needs a regas (could someone point me in the right direction with that please), can you tell I'm smitten?

Like the power delivery too of the 2.2 DTi - not like a VAG TDi PD where it was nothing, nothing, torque steer, hells bells that's fast, brake, blimey I'm sweating, wow. BB is more manageable (no doubt due to the slightly more modest bhp/torque aswell as the 1650 kg ballast). Anyway as per my newbie post - I'm more about mpg than mph nowadays. Also never had a CD mutli- changer before or steering wheel controls so quite tickled about that. I read with interest about a post about what cars our Mum's and Dad's had and what cars we grew up with and whilst the Omega isn't the newest car I have ever owned (I bought my Panda at 7 years old), it is the best spec'd car I have owned by far. The nearest was my dad's second company car which I bought from him my beloved G reg 216 Rover Vitesse which also 4 x e/w, e/sunroof, alloys, but only a stereo radio cassette (sign of the times it was 1990). My other cars have just been candidates for S.O.T.W on pistonheads but that suits me and my personality probably too.

The Omega had just turned 93K when I bought it so judging by those on e-gay, Big Barrie has plenty of life left in him yet. I have some rust on the rear arches but have read the threads on that, my alloys are scrape free mostly, my front doors do crack when opened and the previous owner did slap some grease on them before he sold it to me, but that doesn't seem to have helped (too little too late?) but hey ho, for the money I paid, I'm a fully signed up fan.

No one wants these big cars anymore do they (or any big car for that matter over 10 years old) - incase of that one big bill which renders the car beyond economic repair - yet for the money they are so well built and put together, although I do have to admit my little Panda which was "only" £7K brand new is really well put together and doesn't squeak, groan or moan despite having currently 103K on it (bought with 87K on it almost 3 years ago).

Curious things cars - I get so attached to mine even the crap ones - especially my first which was crap but that didn't matter, it was my dad's hand me down when he got his first company car which was a jet black facelift 216 vitesse on a E plate which started my vitesse "thing" off - my first car was therefore the family car and it was a - wait for it - a 1982 X reg Morris Ital 1.7 HL saloon - reg no LBB 822X - colour was champagne (dirty white) with gold leaf (read rust) on the front wings, doors, cills - you get the picture. I still have the brochure and my dad's receipt when he traded in his Datsun Sunny 120Y (VJR 412T) for it. So hopefully the Omega aka BB is destined to join the same motley crew ranks and be coveted to boot, lets hope the honeymoon doesn't end too soon.

Cheers

One query - well actually this is the second as the CC regas was the first - Steering - does anyone steering have play/slack in it with the ignition on or is that a fault with the rack?

I wish I could put up pictures but don't have a camera, will have to see if can use the ex-wife I-Pad thingy.

Mmm, I think this is a rhetorical question, but should I have put this in the General thread rather than the General Help, can it be transferred by some one clever or an admin type person with powers..... :-X

CC regas
Steering wheel a bit vague/slack at TDC
Cracky front doors when opened wide

Apologies - got touch of the verbal trots - I'm happy with my new car - forgive me

CC regas - normally costs about £50-£60 to vac out, pressure test and regass if all ok.

Cracky front doors - replace the plastic castellated bushes (dirt cheap from Vx dealer) and 10 minute job - should cure - howto in Maintenance guides

Steering - check for play in steerig idler, wishbones, track rods

HTH ;)

They are great comfy barges, got very attached to mine. Driven to Austria in -18 in my 2.2 LPG, never missed a beat. 166k young, still going strong.  :)

Also EML should not be triggered by brake fluid change, might be worth investing in a code reader  :y

thank you, both of you

"Cracky front doors - replace the plastic castellated bushes (dirt cheap from Vx dealer) and 10 minute job - should cure - howto in Maintenance guides" - great thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I have a Vx dealer local in Hartlepool (Tones)

Steering idler - I have that link

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90626.0

but haven't checked the other parts so will do cheers

WRT - "Also EML should not be triggered by brake fluid change, might be worth investing in a code reader - the garage has one where I go so will ask them to plug it in" - actually the same garage have "borrowed" BB to go to Scotland in it this w/e (need large boot and enough space for 5) - and I have the youngest son's 1.0 litre J reg Vx Nova 3 dr - which is an absolute hoot to drive (no PAS, no airbag - that will be my face, no front crumple zones, that's my shins and legs) - I learnt to drive in a Nova 2dr saloon and then took my test in a 3 dr hatch as the 2 dr saloon was written off (not by me I hasten to add), but I tell you what I feel ever so vunerable compared to my Panda, but I feel everything in the Nova, every steering input, every bump where as the Panda feels isolated (PAS is so very light anyway in a Panda)

Cheers

I think I have the right interpretation on TC but if someone can also just confirm - as I understand it, TC no longer exists or won't in the very near future (I was going to buy some front discs and pads whilst it was still alive - given the debate that pattern parts warp), so no point in buying a card for £25 only for it to become redundant - correct?

Has anyone any news on Trade Club closing down? Bellinger Grove, where I have bought parts and supplies for 15 years using Autobahnstormers membership to get TC rates, recently told me they were withdrawing from the scheme. I am seeking a new TC source. I guess I have to ring the nearest dealers in the list above and see if they are continuing in membership.

The ones on the list above are the current ones participating, following the slashing of numbers a few weeks ago
