So following on from Jay's excellent how2 on the headlight cleaning he did, I purchased the same kit:

Think it's time to give these a go on my 2.2 (along with some new Osram Night Breakers Unlimited)

Reading some of the reviews of the kit, they mention no sealant is included with the kit. Is it worth getting something like this:

To then seal the headlights once done?

Eric the Car Guy does this refurb on Youtube. His came with sealer. I would assume that it should be used. Check out his video online..... and put the stuff on by hand and not an electric buffer type tool. He almost ruined it using power tools

Quite a few people suggest the sealant, guess it's worth a go at the relative low cost

It would be nice to udnerstand exactly what your trying to seal given that Polycarbonate is not exactly an open pore material and you will have just polished it super smooth.

Rainex or similar would be just as good (and maybe better)

My understanding, and I'm probably wrong ... is that the "sealant" is actually a "coating" that increases the protection of the polycarbonate to UVa and UVb deterioration ... so the exercise in "cleaning" does not have to be repeated so soon.........

As Entwood says I thought it was to increase protection? I was under impression there was some kind of sealant put on at the factory?

Not aware of any sealent used at the (headlight manufacturers) factory, polycarbonate is pretty UV stable anyway, if your that worried about UV, lob some decent vehicle wax on it.

Not too worried about UV, just going by reviews of the cleaning kit as if i'm going to do this, might as well make a good job of it

if you get a nanotech coating designed for windscreens i can highly recommend it (and you can use it for the lights obviously) the rain just pearls up and falls off the car which is what would protect the lights from grime i geuss, with ice on the windscreen i take to it with a plastic scraper and the stuff flies off, generally it lasts about 6 months before renewal is needed.

From what Mrgreen has described, The stuff sounds similar to this stuff I bought, Last up to 2 years or 30,000 miles.. http://bit.ly/1jKzXUu .. It's good stuff, Keeps the windscreen from frosting and makes for eaisier cleaning. Could also be used on headlights I guess.

yes that looks like the stuff! we have kits for windscreens and for headlights but i'm geussing you could use the windscreen one for headlights (not vice versa!! the results are not good!) these are two part kits with a primer, will have a look at the shop tomorrow to see where we get this stuff from

As mr. Fuse18 said there is nothing to seal on polycarbonate. Glass is different. On PC you can grind it, cut it bend it etc and when done just sand it and it is "polished". Any sealant wont do a thing, no use but also no harm. UV stability is built in the PC raw material mixture, it is not any surface treatment.
