mv6 cutting out
« on: 21 December 2013, 20:28:19 »

I have a 1999 MV6 and today it was running fine when suddenly while driving it cut out for a second then instantly restarted again, this happened several times on a 10 mile journey. When I came to restart after 3 hours it wouldn't start at first after several attempts it started after I had fiddled with the fuse box and ECU. I drove for a couple of miles with it cutting out then it cut out and stopped.

After a while it restarted and has ran fine ever since but it is obviously faulty, now the rev counter is erratic so I suspect it is an ECU problem, I will do a paperclip test tomorrow to see what code it gives me but any advice would be appreciated.

As above +1. Use only genuine new sensor.

I did have a crank sensor go before but it only cut out when hot, would this be the cause of the rev counter stopping and being erratic? obviously it would be a easier fix than the ECU.

Best place is GM, or Vauxhall parts world.

The ecu being at fault is a myth, only ever heard of two omega ecus going bad in many years

The dodgey rev counter just confirms its the crank sensor, as the crank sensor is what sends the engine rpm to the ecu and hence the dials!

It's your crank sensor, your ECU hasn't 'gone' ;)
