Nice little story of country (Spanish) life
« on: 03 January 2014, 14:20:11 »

A week ago , I went into the bar up the main busy street (only one car wide) in our local town at 10.00a.m. to do the lottery.

As I went in a chap pulled up outside in his 4x4. , left the engine running and door open and came in. I thought he must be coming in for a packet of fags before going olive harvesting so let him go first. Glass of Anis please?  he said . Three or four leisurely gulps and it was gone. He paid his euro and went out!!  There was a car waiting patiently behind him .

Just how many things would have happened to him in Britain for doing that? Towed/clamped, CCTV ticket in the post, fined for leaving a vehicle running, stolen, breathalised , fight?. The list is endless.

Well you are right unemployment is very high, especially in the countryside but just about everyone around here has a small plot or more of olives as a legacy from Franco's days (he made them leave the towns where they sought jobs and go back and live off the land). No point in starting harvesting much before ten as it is too cold and the trees are still damp so you get soaked. They then work more or less non stop till dusk. Then take the days haul to the co op etc. I would say that is the way with 50% of Spanish olive trees. It only takes those folk  briefly off unemployement (there isn't really dole just an emergency payment per household of 425 euros a month ). The rest are farmed more intensively

Here he would have come out to what car, where some 13 year old hoodie was disappearing down the road at high speed in it.  :o :o :o :o

In France it seems to be quite normal for lorry drivers to have breakfast with a calvados chaser at a cafe or restaurant de routiers.  :o
