I rented my spare room out and after some hassles with the lodgers,i.e going into my room stealing my money and some personal stuff,police around to arrest 1 of them at 4am sunday morning,2weeks ago,also doing wacky backy,they left,last week and handed keys back,so they asked for deposit back,so far,ive got to get a professional carpet cleaner to come in and clean carpet after stains left on it,had to redecorate room due to stains and marks on walls,total cost so far is more than the deposit they left,after i take for the money etc stolen from room and for my time and paint and to get carpet cleaned,and they've had the cheek to keep calling me asking for it back,also found a stash of drugs which i got rid off .So am i right in not giving anything back at all?

I'd be taking them to court for the difference

Tell them to do one. 

On the other hand, they know where you live 

Also - not sure if it's relevant, since they were lodgers, rather than tenants - did you put the deposit in escrow? (or whatever it's called? - I'm a bit doped up on painkillers and my heads more fuzzy than usual  )
