When a battery is shagged, its shagged.

Car batteries do not like deep discharge, they rarely recover from it.

A decent charger is always a good investment, what TB is saying is that if you let the battery discharge too far then it won't matter how good the charger is because the damage is already done.

That's more of a battery boiler than a charger

it has 2 modes .. min mode around 9 volt max 11 .. but at minimum it doesnt show any amperes.. and requires a lot of time that my patience wont suffice.. so I used max which took around 5 hours to 14.4 :-\

4 years old?

Is that reasonable life from a battery?

Fast charging a battery is never a good idea as it will shorten the lifespan if done too often, the ideal charge rate is 10% of the Ah rating of the battery (eg, an 85 Ah battery should be charged at a rate of 8.5 Ah).

Not in my book, but if it has been neglected then 4 years would probably qualify as reasonable.

If its been deep discharged, or worse still, deep discharged and left flat, then that can happen to a new battery.

You can try desulphation tablets (if not sealed) or maintenence chargers to do the same, but if the battery is already damaged by neglect, you're pissing in the wind.

Got called out to change one on one of my old cars, 3.5 year old Bosch one with a five year guarantee. Still had the receipt so took it back to Helfrods ::) Had mine tested whilst there, and chap declared that it needed a bloody good charge... had driven to Lyndhurst and back the night before, so should have been fully charged  :-\

Is HSB 096 any use on the Omega?

Because my thinking is if there's battery trouble after 3 years then I'd just replace it. But then I know nothing about batteries.

Have managed to eek a couple more years out of the leisure batteries I had on the boat by tpping up the cells with distilled water. Possible even on 'maintainence free' batteries but don't expect a refund after as it will be pretty obvious that it's been tampered with ::)

With car batteries, I tend to simply buy one with the longest guarantee and keep hold of the receipt  :-\ any problems, take it back for a new one :y
