Vonage Phone calls.
« on: 06 February 2014, 17:00:47 »

Hi all have today been offered a new way in which  to make phone calls and do away with line rental. Having read the said info that accommodates it all seems good, but before i take the plunge do any Oof members have experience with VONAGE. Apparently its as easy as plugging in to your existing router. Seems all to easy to me which makes me dubious.

 ??? ???

Isn't your router connected to a telephone line?

Only if you are on ADSL/Infinity, VM's Cable customers will only have to pay Vonage the monthly rental of the service (which is still in effect a form of line rental).

Can try similar proper VoIP services without the monthly cost.

I use Sipgate (www.sipgate.co.uk) for some of my VoIP services. They are OK, without being outstanding or bad.

Note, you'll still need a phone line for your broadband to run over (unless you're with VM). Some ISPs purposely block/downgrade VoIP (like PlusNet, if you don't use their VoIP service).

Depends on your needs if its worthwhile. I have a few relatives abroad, much cheaper to call over VoIP, and my mum uses same VoIP provider (and sipgate to sipgate calls are free). Additionally, I have the VoIP service set up on my mobile, so when abroad myself, I just need to find wifi, and can call the UK for 1.5p a min.
