Any information about Omega ECU
« on: 26 February 2014, 00:11:32 »

Call me insane but ( hypothetically ) I'm looking at the possibility of fitting an Omex 600 ECU ( http://omextechnology.co.uk/page75.html )to run in tandem with my standard ECU's. The idea is to get the Omex unit to take the control of the vital and important systems like the injectors for fuelling, the coil pack for ignition and Lambda's for emission control!
All of this is to achieve 2 main goals really, Firstly to give me full control of the engine and secondly to have the ability to fit a decent Turbo Charger!
Now I have already spoken to the wonderful folks at Omex who assure me, although a little fiddly, this can be achieved. However there are some issues that are causing me a bit of a headache, such as, Does this system communicate using Can-bus?. Does the gearbox rely heavily on what the ECU tells it to work properly?. And most importantly can you turn off certain circuits in the standard ECU such as lambda's, cam position and crank sensors?
The last points are the most important as it's a road car, The EML needs to stay off and the car would need to be panic attack free for M.O.T's or the whole thing would be a none starter ... the car is a FL 2.2 2003 registered and I'm quite aware that the ECU is heavily locked to stop you playing with it (unlike earlier models) and most people will say "buy a V6 if you want extra power"! but the point of this exercise is just to prove that the 2.2 doesn't have to be pedestrian, boring and under powered ... It's all just good fun
Cheers in advance Graham

I think you will struggle to keep the main engine ECU happy. It will need crank and cam sensor inputs to do anything sensible, for a start. Anything you disconnect - injectors, etc. needs replacing with an equivalent load as all circuits are monitored by the ECU.

CAN is used between engine ECU and autobox ECU to share speed and load information and also for the engine ECU to reduce torque when the gearbox is shifting. You'd need to implement that somehow.

Frankly, I think I would use a manual gearbox if tuning an Omega. ;)
