Metal Sunroof Trim
« on: 10 April 2014, 22:25:47 »

Expect I am not alone here so would welcome others solutions to the flaky paintwork on the metal sunroof trim.

Can the trim be removed on its own to refurbish or is it a mask up/rub down/prime/paint ?

Used the pressure washer yesterday.. Got a little close trying to get the green stuff away and well... It stripped some of the touch up paint I put there last year  ;D .. No worries put some more touch up paint today, Not noticeable again unless you really looking.  :y

Not sure if mine is due to pressure washer as seems to be more white /grey metal visible than original black. :o

You'll be masking off & respraying because it's all one unit.

If you do a search, MarksDTM showed what screws need to be undone to remove the glass - there's only 6 IIRC

Was considering last year to remove all the paint and polish the alloy up, Thought it'd look good especially on a darker coloured Omega..

Had the same problem with mine. Its an aluminium alloy

Rubbed it down with an abrasive strip (used for cleaning copper pipe in plumbing) and brush painted with hammerite (3 coates).

This was the result 2 years ago and it still looks the same

Wear a glove when rubbing down takes a lot of effort and my thumb took about 2 weeks to heal

BTW did it in-situ

This is the abrasive strip

Cheers for advise SIR Philbutt.

Your efforts and final result looks good and I will be happy if mine comes close to that as looks more white/grey than black at present.

Assume you removed the entire glass as per guide ?....Smooth Hammerite ??

No did in-situ. Put duct (or duck) tape around on paint and glass to stop scratching, Yes used smooth.

I think the bubbling and grey/white appearance is due to some kind of oxidation going on, water ingress maybe
