Raspberry Pi or similar as it will use a lot less power but will happily run Ubuntu
But only a mongrel would use that heap of shite instead of the Pi foundation's Rasbian, which (like Ubuntu) a clone of Debian but (unlike Ubuntu) not breaked around with by idiots, in an effort to make it as quirky and unstable as possible ;D

OP - as said, you're contract is with Sky, you need to moan at them. I doubt they'll take any interest in any logs gathered TBH. If its a BT issue, Sky need to moan at BT. You have no direct contract with BT for broadband. Also, only Sky will directly know which part of BT, if it is a BT issue, as Sky have a fair amount of (very aging) LLU kit, and not use BT Wholesale kit at all.

Does the phone line work for voice when it goes off? Noisy/crackly?
