The WOW's and WOE's of Omega ownership
« on: 08 September 2014, 21:55:39 »

During the summer hols had 4 weeks on the continent, Cote D'Azur, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Normandy, Somme (no not with a tin tent)

Did 72 hours of actual driving (stopwatched), covering 2960 miles (rolled over the 100,000 mark as well), averaging 49mph and 27mpg, loaded to the gunnels and carrying three

Ran like a train and only gave a little bit of trouble with Italian LPG and the cheap Luxembourg petrol (their LPG filler is different for some reason)

Was so pleased with the old girl, UNTIL last week.

Started stuttering a little, then on thurs was miss firing when started, but ok when LPG switched in. Thought it was the the Lux petrol which is still in. Then on Fri was miss firing almost all the time and then "COOLANT LEVEL" comes up on the display, OH NO! get home take each plug out and no2 is oily/wet. Dip with a long cotton bud and is soaked in pink coolant

So - Picture below is the old and new HG, has rotted away on the water ports and split the metal ring on cyl 2

Anyone have any idea if this is just a bad gasket or the anti-freeze (VX pink stuff was in)

New Gasket kit is a Victor Reinz, New cambelt kit a a Gates, although dont understand how the new brand, or the amount of time, explains the failure of this one ??

That gasket has degraded quite badly given it's been in there just 3 years. :o The coolant should still have been fine, assuming a good 50/50 mixture was used when filling and it's not had excessive topping-up so I doubt it's anything more than just a poor quality gasket fitted.

Hardly any topping up since it was put in, maybe a litre, at worst 2, but bit by bit.

What is worse, too diluted or not diluted enough, or both ?
