Bit of Wifi help please
« on: 26 October 2014, 09:30:21 »

We have bought a cheap desktop running XP for use at the sick aunts house in Scotland.

Internet access is via a 3G dongle and works fine. The base unit has an installed WiFi adapter.

Question is ... Can I make it so that an Ipad can connect via Wifi through the 3g dongle.?

If so how?

If the driver for the wifi card will let you put in 'access point' mode, then you should be able to...
If it will, then the tablet should be able to connect to it..
You will also have to put the 3g dongle internet connection in sharing mode...

You could use ICS on XP, and have the Wifi in Ad Hoc mode. It won't be great though, and I suspect it'll need constant pissing around with. Really can't recommend such a setup.

A better option may be a MiFi unit, and connect both devices wirelessly. Or better still, fixed line broadband with a wireless router ;)

Thanks. Mr Taxi driver

I have had a firkle and concluded it won't work. We actually have one of those dongle routers spare at home (1600 miles away).

The desperate need is receding.

This desktop will be packed away after this emergency and kept in the boot of the UK spare car for the next emergency. :( :(
